Super moon rising over Temple
August 11, 2014
Sunday night’s super moon peeks
over the rooftops of downtown Temple. This phenomenon occurs when the full moon
coincides with the moon’s closest approach to the Earth during its elliptical
orbit around us.
The full moon appeared 14 percent
bigger and 30 percent brighter than when it is at its farthest. The moon Sunday
was 190,000 miles from the Earth, 20 percent closer than its farthest point,
when it is 240,000 miles away.
The astronomical term for a super moon
is a perigee full moon, as perigee means “near Earth.”
